Crossword Genius

Rude cultivation around dairy, first source of milk (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

udder

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'source of milk' is the definition.
(eg a cow's udder)

'rude cultivation around dairy first' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'dairy first' could be 'd' (1st letter of 'dairy') and 'd' is found within the answer.
an anagram of 'rude' is 'uder' which is within the left over letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for udder that I've seen before include "milk supplier" , "Cow's milk "bag"" , "Part of a cow" , "Cow's teat" , "What's at rear on cows" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
