Crossword Genius

Sabbath preceding rubbish band (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stripe

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'band' is the definition.
('stripe' can be a synonym of 'band')

'sabbath preceding rubbish' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'sabbath' could be 's' and 's' is located in the answer.
'rubbish' could be 'tripe' ('tripe' can be a synonym of 'rubbish') and 'tripe' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stripe that I've seen before include "Band of colour, maybe of rank" , "Long narrow mark found in tripes" , "Broad band" , "Braid showing military rank" , "Band of colour - 3 of rank" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
