Crossword Genius

Sacked US lawman’s flipping stunned (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

defrocked

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sacked us' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with social activities as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'lawman's flipping stunned' is the wordplay.
'lawman' becomes 'fed' (fed can informally mean a federal agent).
'flipping' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'stunned' becomes 'rocked' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'fed' backwards is 'def'.
'def'+'rocked'='DEFROCKED'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for defrocked that I've seen is " Deposed from priesthood".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
