Crossword Genius

Savings for bird's home and layings (4-4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nest-eggs

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'savings' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'bird's home and layings' is the wordplay.
'bird's home' becomes 'nest' (I've seen this in another clue).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'layings' becomes 'eggs' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'nest'+'eggs'='NEST-EGGS'

'for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nest-eggs that I've seen before include "Sums of money saved by birds? (4, 4)" , "Funds put by as reserves" , "Saved-up sums" , "Small savings for a rainy day" , "Moneys saved for future use - by birds?" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
