'fifty elizabeth squeezed through mangles' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'fifty' could be 'l' (Roman numeral) and 'l' is found in the answer.
'elizabeth' could be 'er' and 'er' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'muffs' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
