Crossword Genius

Scotsman goes up to join university (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cambridge

'university' is the definition.
(Cambridge is an example)

'scotsman goes up to join' is the wordplay.
'scotsman' becomes 'mac'.
'goes up' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'to join' becomes 'bridge' (bridging is a kind of joining**).
'mac' written backwards gives 'cam'.
'cam'+'bridge'='CAMBRIDGE'

(Other definitions for cambridge that I've seen before include "East Anglian city" , "Light blue university?" , "place of learning" , "University city" , "English city" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
