Ross

I believe the answer is:

argus

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'guardian' is the definition.
(term for a guardian, from the mythological figure)

'scotsman's right to replace new' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'right' could be 'ar' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'ar' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'gus' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for argus that I've seen before include "Alert watchman" , "Greek giant with 100 eyes" , "Small butterfly" , "Legendary Guardian" , "In Greek myth, a many-eyed monster slain by Hermes" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
