Scrap previous wordplay raised as an example (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

expunge

'scrap' is the definition.
(to expunge is to erase or remove)

'previous wordplay raised as an example' is the wordplay.
'previous' becomes 'ex' (I've seen this in other clues).
'wordplay' becomes 'pun' (synonyms).
'raised' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'as an example' becomes 'eg'.
'eg' written backwards gives 'ge'.
'ex'+'pun'+'ge'='EXPUNGE'

(Other definitions for expunge that I've seen before include "Cut it out!" , "Obliterate - erase" , "Annihilate" , "Completely remove" , "Delete from the record" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
