Crossword Genius

Scrap southern people (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sherd

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'scrap' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'southern people' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'southern' could be 's' (abbreviation) and 's' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'herd' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sherd that I've seen before include "Piece of broken pottery" , "archaeologist's find" , "Gap" , "archaeological find" , "A bit of pottery" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
