Scraps outside of trendy meeting places (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

joints

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'meeting places' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being plural nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'scraps outside of trendy' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is found in the answer.
'trendy' could be 'in' ('in' can mean fashionable) and 'in' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for joints that I've seen before include "Points of connection between two bones" , "Points of connection between two elements" , "Structures in body in which bones are fitted together" , "Junctions, unions" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
