Seized entourage on ship, resulting in gutless end (9)
I believe the answer is:
possessed
'seized entourage' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with ownership as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'on ship resulting in gutless end' is the wordplay.
'on' says to put letters next to each other.
'ship' becomes 'SS' (prefix in ship names eg SS Great Britain).
'resulting in' becomes 'posse' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'gutless' suggests removing the centre.
'end' with its centre taken out is 'ed'.
'ss' put after 'posse' is 'possess'.
'possess'+'ed'='POSSESSED'
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for possessed that I've seen before include "Demented" , "Controlled by a devil, say" , "Bore" , "It's collected" , "Owned or controlled - by the devil?" .)
