Crossword Genius

Select a quiet spot (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

appoint

'select' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'a quiet spot' is the wordplay.
'quiet' becomes 'p' (music symbol for 'piano', ie soft or quiet).
'spot' becomes 'point' (synonyms).
'a'+'p'+'point'='APPOINT'

(Other definitions for appoint that I've seen before include "Set in place" , "Assign job to (someone)" , "Nominate" , "Ordain" , "Pick" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun, The Guardian and The Telegraph.
