Self-possessed, albeit out of control (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cool

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'self-possessed' is the definition.
(thesaurus)

'albeit out of control' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'col' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cool that I've seen before include "Lovely" , "Fan" , "Pleasantly fresh, not too cold" , "Not hot or warm - just unexcited" , "chic" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
