Set free, did a bit of running and finally departed (8)
I believe the answer is:
ransomed
'finally departed' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are past participle verbs, I can't understand how one could define the other.
'set free did a bit of running' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is located in the answer.
'bit' could be 'o' (resembles 0, a binary digit or bit) and 'o' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
'and' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for ransomed that I've seen before include "rescued" , "Bought ones freedom" , "sequel to Kidnapped?" , "Paid for" , "held hostage for money" .)
