Set out to pinch gold and silver for stash (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

storage

'stash' is the definition.

'set out to pinch gold and silver' is the wordplay.
'out' means to remove the last letter.
'to pinch' indicates putting letters inside.
'gold' becomes 'tor' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'silver' becomes 'ag' ('Ag' can be a synonym of 'silver').
'set' with its last letter removed is 'se'.
'tor'+'ag'='torag'
'se' going around 'torag' is 'STORAGE'.

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for storage that I've seen before include "Charge for warehousing" , "safekeeping" , "Stowage" , "- Heater; - battery" , "Longer-term laying up" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
