Crossword Genius

Setter follows one out to get gold or silver perhaps (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

metals

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'silver perhaps' is the definition.
(I know that Ag is a type of noble metal)

'setter follows one out to get gold' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'setter' could be 'me' (the setter of the clue) and 'me' is located in the answer.
'one' could be 'a' (a thing is one thing) and 'a' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'or' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for metals that I've seen before include "Gold and aluminium, say" , "Copper, tin and iron" , "Chemical elements that are usually shiny solids" , "Such as iron, gold, etc" , "Silver and aluminium, say" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
