sweaters

'the garments' is the definition.
(sweater is a kind of garment)

'sew inexpertly jagged tears' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'sew' is 'swe' which is within the answer.
an anagram of 'tears' is 'aters' which is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'in' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sweaters that I've seen before include "Jumpers or pullovers - make you perspire" , "Jerseys, pullovers" , "Knitted upper garments" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
