Shade that is up, from which to get down? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eider

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'down?' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'shade that is up' is the wordplay.
'shade' becomes 'red' (red is a colour or shade).
'that is' becomes 'ie' (short for Latin 'id est', 'that is').
'up' is a reversal indicator (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'red'+'ie'='redie'
'redie' in reverse letter order is 'EIDER'.

'from which to get' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eider that I've seen before include "Downy sea duck" , "Duck valued for its fine soft down" , "Sea duck with soft down" , "Duck providing fine down" , "Duck from which down is obtained" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
