I believe the answer is:

siding

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'short track' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'primitive instinct to stop to perform it?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'instinct' could be 'id' (id is a kind of instinct) and 'id' is found within the answer.
'perform' could be 'sing' (to perform a song) and 'sing' is found within the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for siding that I've seen before include "Section of track" , "Short branch line" , "Short piece of railway track used for shunting" , "location for shunter" , "having supportive position" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
