Sign about a shrew (6)
I believe the answer is:
virago
'shrew' is the definition.
(I know that Virago is a type of shrew)
'sign about a' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'sign' could be 'v' (a V-sign a gesture made with two fingers) and 'v' is found in the answer.
'about' could be 'a' (abbreviation in Chambers) and 'a' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for virago that I've seen before include "Strong and aggressive woman" , "Bad-tempered woman" , "Formidable female" , "A fiery or abusive woman" , "Scolding or domineering woman" .)
