Sign for ten outstanding wines (8)
I believe the answer is:
portents
'sign' is the definition.
(I know this)
'ten outstanding wines' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'ten' is 'ent' which is within the answer.
'wines' could be 'ports' (port is a kind of wine) and 'ports' is found in the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'for' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for portents that I've seen before include "Ominous signs" , "Omens" , "Signs of things about to happen" .)
