Crossword Genius

Ross

I believe the answer is:

yodel

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sing' is the definition.
(I know that sing is a is a more specific form of the action of yodel)

'poetic in the outskirts of yeovil' is the wordplay.
'poetic' becomes 'ode' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'in the' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'outskirts of' says to hollow out the word (remove centre letters) (only letters on the outskirts).
'yeovil' with its middle removed is 'yl'.
'ode' inserted inside 'yl' is 'YODEL'.

'something' is the link.
This may not be right. It may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for yodel that I've seen before include "Sing (Swiss style)" , "Warbling voice" , "Sing falsetto like Swiss mountain people" , "Alpine mountain call" , "Sing partly falsetto" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
