Sing with Italian sopranos covering heavy metal (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

confess

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sing' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with communicating as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps you can see a link between them that I don't see?

'with italian sopranos covering heavy metal' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'metal' could be 'fe' (Fe is an example) and 'fe' is found in the answer.
'with italian' could be 'con' and 'con' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for confess that I've seen before include "Concede" , "Admit (to wrongdoing)" , "Tell a priest one's sins" , "Plead guilty (in order to receive absolution?)" , "Admit (to crime)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
