Sirens chant quietly close to Odysseus (8)

I believe the answer is:
mantraps
'sirens' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'chant quietly close to odysseus' is the wordplay.
'chant' becomes 'mantra' (I've seen this before).
'quietly' becomes 'p' (musical symbol).
'close to' says to take the final letters (the close/ending of).
The last letter of 'odysseus' is 's'.
'mantra'+'p'+'s'='MANTRAPS'
(Another definition for mantraps that I've seen is " Could be pitfalls".)
I've seen this clue in The Independent.
