Crossword Genius

Six balls bound to go too far (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

overrun

'go too far' is the definition.
(to run or go on too long)

'six balls bound' is the wordplay.
'six balls' becomes 'over' (sequence of six balls bowled in cricket).
'bound' becomes 'run' (bound can mean to run or skip).
'over'+'run'='OVERRUN'

'to' is the link.

(Other definitions for overrun that I've seen before include "Exceed time allowed, or spread across and injure (7)" , "UN rover (anag.)" , "Conquer - go on too long" , "Invade conclusively - extend beyond limit" , "Go beyond the allotted time" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
