Crossword Genius

Sketch daughter with dog losing lead (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

doodle

'sketch' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Rough sketch ' mean 'doodle' so perhaps 'sketch' could also mean 'doodle')

'daughter with dog losing lead' is the wordplay.
'daughter' becomes 'd' (genealogical abbreviation).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'dog' becomes 'poodle' (breed of dog).
'losing lead' means to remove the first letter.
'poodle' with its initial letter taken off is 'oodle'.
'd'+'oodle'='DOODLE'

(Other definitions for doodle that I've seen before include "Casual drawing" , "Scribble about old ode" , "Scribble idly" , "Aimless drawing" , "Scribbled drawing" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
