Crossword Genius

Skinny legend' first to find out (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

glean

'to find out' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'skinny legend' first' is the wordplay.
'skinny' becomes 'lean' (similar in meaning).
'legend'' becomes 'g' (leg-end - end letter of 'leg').
'first' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'lean' put after 'g' is 'GLEAN'.

(Other definitions for glean that I've seen before include "Gather; collect gradually" , "Pull together from various sources" , "Gather (grains of information?)" , "Collect gradually from scattered sources" , "Gradually put together" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
