Slip away when sink fell? (2,8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

go downhill

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'slip' is the definition.
(thesaurus)

'away when sink fell?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'sink' could be 'godown' (synonyms) and 'godown' is located in the answer.
'fell?' could be 'hill' (I've seen this before) and 'hill' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for go downhill that I've seen before include "deteriorate" , "take part in skiing event" , "fall" , "Ski" , "Skiers will usually" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
