Crossword Genius

Slow to lose depression, despite changing skirt (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sidestep

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'skirt' is the definition.
('sidestep' can be a synonym of 'skirt')

'slow to lose depression despite changing' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'despite' is 'idestep' which is within the answer.
A single letter 's' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sidestep that I've seen before include "Shift to right or left" , "Find a way round" , "Dodge - circumvent" , "Dodge (an issue?)" , "To avoid" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
