Crossword Genius

Smell of a scrap of cloth in the country (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fragrance

'smell' is the definition.
(I know that smell can be written as fragrance)

'a scrap of cloth in the country' is the wordplay.
'a scrap of cloth' becomes 'rag' (I've seen this in another clue).
'in the' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'country' becomes 'France' (France is an example).
'rag' placed inside 'france' is 'FRAGRANCE'.

'of' is the link.

(Other definitions for fragrance that I've seen before include "Bouquet" , "Sweet smell" , "Perfume" , "Cologne, perhaps" , "Pleasant scent" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
