Crossword Genius

Social awkwardness of a youth (not women) in Montana (13)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

maladjustment

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'social awkwardness' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'a youth not women in montana' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'a' is found in the answer.
'youth' could be 'lad' (I've seen this before) and 'lad' is located in the answer.
'not' could be 'nt' ('n't' can be a synonym of 'not') and 'nt' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'of' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for maladjustment that I've seen before include "Alienation from one's environment" , "Inability to cope with a normal environment" , "Psychological inability to fit in" , "Disturbance, alienation" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
