Crossword Genius

Solders, maybe, use tin mixture (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

unites

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'solders' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their -s form, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'use tin mixture' is the wordplay.
'mixture' is an anagram indicator.
'use'+'tin'='usetin'
'usetin' with letters rearranged gives 'UNITES'.

'maybe' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for unites that I've seen before include "Becomes one" , "(old) money?" , "Confederates" , "Combines" , "Joins together as one" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
