Crossword Genius

Soldiers attempt to follow home supporter (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

infantry

'soldiers' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'attempt to follow home supporter' is the wordplay.
'attempt' becomes 'try' (I've seen this before).
'to follow' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'home' becomes 'in' ('he's home' can mean 'he's in').
'supporter' becomes 'fan' (fan is a kind of supporter).
'in'+'fan'='infan'
'try' put after 'infan' is 'INFANTRY'.

(Other definitions for infantry that I've seen before include "part of the army" , "fighting group" , "Unmounted fighters" , "Men fighting" , "Foot-soldiers" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
