Crossword Genius

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hussars

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'soldiers' is the definition.
(hussar is a kind of soldier)

'quiet hospital eradicated respiratory disease' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'hospital' could be 'h' (abbreviation for hospital) and 'h' is found within the answer.
'disease' could be 'sars' (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and 'sars' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'us' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hussars that I've seen before include "horsemen" , "Cavalrymen" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
