Solicitor General holding tongue in row (7)

I believe the answer is:
shindig
'solicitor general' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.
'tongue in row' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'tongue' could be 'hindi' (Hindi is an example) and 'hindi' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'holding' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for shindig that I've seen before include "Bash" , "Noisy disturbance" , "Lively party, knees-up" , "Hidings (anag) - party" , "Rumpus" .)
