Crossword Genius

Some of Veronese's paintings mounted in east end of church (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

apse

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'east end of church' is the definition.
'apse' can be an answer for 'church' (I've seen this before). I'm not certain of the 'east end of' bit.

'some of veronese's paintings mounted' is the wordplay.
'some of' indicates a hidden word.
'mounted' says the letters should be written backwards.
'espa' is hidden in the letters of 'veroneses paintings'.
'espa' backwards is 'APSE'.

'in' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for apse that I've seen before include "Church area" , "Recess in church wall" , "room for an altar" , "Large recess in church" , "Part of a church with the altar" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
