Somewhere in Texas, a vessel from America? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

austin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'america?' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both locations as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'somewhere in texas a vessel' is the wordplay.
'somewhere in texas' becomes 'aus' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'a vessel' becomes 'tin' (I've seen this in other clues).
'aus'+'tin'='AUSTIN'

'from' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for austin that I've seen before include "Capital city of Texas" , "Texan state capital" , "Engineer" , "State capital of Texas" , "Texan city" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
