I believe the answer is:

linctus

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'soothing medicine' is the definition.
'linctus' can be an answer for 'medicine' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'soothing' bit.

I cannot understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for linctus that I've seen before include "Syrupy medicine to relieve sore throats" , "Syrup that may see a cough off" , "Special formulation" , "Thick liquid medicine" , "Cough remedy" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times and The Sun.
