Sort of chest that may be scraped (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

barrel

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'sort' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'chest that may be scraped' is the second definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for barrel that I've seen before include "Cask, drum" , "Container for beer etc" , "Oil or beer container" , "Cheerful old song: 'Roll out the . . . . . .'" , "Beer cask" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
