Sort to be found if in the street (4)
I believe the answer is:
sift
'sort' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'if in the street' is the wordplay.
'in the' is an insertion indicator.
'street' becomes 'st' (abbreviation).
'if' going within 'st' is 'SIFT'.
'to be found' is the link.
This may not be correct. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for sift that I've seen before include "Put through a sieve" , "Winnow out" , "Sort carefully" , "Examine minutely" , "screen" .)
