Ross

I believe the answer is:

amazon

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'greatest current asset' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'south america's' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'america' could be 'am' and 'am' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for amazon that I've seen before include "running through Peru, Colombia and Brazil" , "Strong woman - large river" , "Female warrior of Greek myth" , "Aggressive female" , "big river" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
