Crossword Genius

Spiro's working in pub, behind bars (2,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

in prison

'behind bars' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'spiro's working in pub' is the wordplay.
'working' indicates anagramming the letters.
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'pub' becomes 'inn' (I've seen this before).
'spiro' with letters rearranged gives 'priso'.
'priso' put within 'inn' is 'IN PRISON'.

(Another definition for in prison that I've seen is " behind bars".)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
