Crossword Genius

Sponge divers source shell from galleon (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

scrounge

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sponge' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'divers source shell from galleon' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'from' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is present in the answer.
'source' could be 'cru' (I have seen 'Source of wine' mean 'cru' so perhaps 'source' could also mean 'cru') and 'cru' is located in the remaining letters.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for scrounge that I've seen before include "Seek something free from others" , "Cadge, sponge" , "Cur's gone (anag) - beg" , "Cadge, beg" , "Acquire by begging" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
