Crossword Genius

Spooner's inhabited part of Western Europe's land (5,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

touch down

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'land' is the definition.
(I know that touch down is a more specific form of land)

'spooner's inhabited part of western europe's' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'part' could be 'do' (do is a kind of part) and 'do' is located in the answer.
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is found in the answer.
'western' could be 'w' and 'w' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for touch down that I've seen before include "Land" , "Reach end of flight" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
