Sporting occasion happening over a long weekend (5-3,5)
![Ross](/clue/static/ross-mug.min.png)
I believe the answer is:
three-day event
'sporting occasion' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both related to natural events as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?
'happening over a long weekend' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'happening' could be 'even' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'even' is found in the answer.
'over' could be 're' and 're' is found in the answer.
'a' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for three-day event that I've seen before include "Equestrian competition involving several skills" , "Dressage, cross-country and showjumping" , "Horse-riding competition" , "Equestrian competition comprising several disciplines" .)
