Sportsmen show energy in silly risks (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

skiers

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sportsmen' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both people as well as being plural nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'energy in silly risks' is the wordplay.
'energy' becomes 'e' (physics symbol as in E=mc2).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'silly' indicates anagramming the letters.
'risks' with letters rearranged gives 'skirs'.
'e' inserted within 'skirs' is 'SKIERS'.

'show' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for skiers that I've seen before include "Highballs" , "They glide on the piste" , "Kisser among snow sportsmen" , "aerial shots" , "They glide across snow for sport" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
