Crossword Genius

Spot retired cover girl (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dilemma

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'spot' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'retired cover girl' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'cover' could be 'lemma' (lemma is a kind of cover) and 'lemma' is found within the answer.
'girl' could be 'di' and 'di' is found within the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for dilemma that I've seen before include "Unpalatable choice" , "difficult question" , "a problem for Shaw's doctor" , "Predicament" , "I'm lamed - it's a puzzle" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
