Crossword Genius

Spree for example writer recalled (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

binge

'spree' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'example writer recalled' is the wordplay.
'example' becomes 'eg' (short for 'exempli gratia', 'for example' in Latin).
'writer' becomes 'nib' (something which writes).
'recalled' shows that the letters should be reversed in order (to recall can mean to bring something back).
'eg'+'nib'='egnib'
'egnib' backwards is 'BINGE'.

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for binge that I've seen before include "Period of excess" , "A drinking bout" , "Period of excessive indulgence" , "Occasion for excessive eating or drinking" , "Indulgent spree" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph and The Independent.
