Spud without jacket consumed in about turn (6)
I believe the answer is:
rotate
'spud' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both related to change as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?
'without jacket consumed in about turn' is the wordplay.
'without' becomes 'absent' (I've seen this in another clue).
'jacket' suggests removing the centre (the letters worn by the word as a 'jacket' are use).
'consumed in' indicates putting letters inside.
'about turn' becomes 'rote' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'absent' with its centre taken out is 'at'.
'at' inserted within 'rote' is 'ROTATE'.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for rotate that I've seen before include "Whisk round" , "Alternate" , "Go round and round" , "Turn round" , "Make to spin around" .)
