Squashes that could make a snack (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sandwiches

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'squashes that could make a' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with contact as well as being verbs in their -s form.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'snack' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'snack' could be 'sandwich' (I've seen this before) and 'sandwich' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'es' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sandwiches that I've seen before include "Quick food" , "submarines?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
